The Farella Brothers Gavin, Jamie & Chris are descendants of the Davis Family who hail from the down east part of The Outer Banks, a fishing town, called Beaufort (pronounced BO-fort) North Carolina. The Davis family were free men working as fishermen known as Chanteymen, who would sing hymns, gospel, and blues songs while hauling nets. The Davis family had their own island called Davis Ridge where they had their own community and were self-sufficient. Growing their own vegetables, making everything from scratch.
Every year, The Brothers would spend the summer in the Outer Banks vacationing and visiting with family and friends. Get togethers and traditions included barbecues and fish-fry’s where everyone pitched in and everything was made from scratch using family recipes. The biggest influence in our upbringing was our dear mother, Cheryll. She instilled in us a great love of hospitality, showed us the importance of using quality ingredients and having respect for food. Mom could cook anything, Indian, Italian, English fare and soul food she could throw down in the kitchen. Sitting around the dinner table as a family sharing food and conversation was the most important part of the day.
After years of spending summers in The Outer Banks and coming home without the comfort of chopped BBQ or sweet tea, the Farella’s sat down as a family and decided to bring their love of the south to the Hudson Valley, NY. They opened a 1,200 square foot BBQ shack in April of 2008 and quickly found themselves immersed deeply into the business, working 18 to 20 hour days in the beginning learning every aspect of the industry without sacrificing quality. As business began to grow in August of 2010 the restaurant caught fire and burnt down. Discouraged but still hungry to win they decided to come back bigger and better than ever. After 2 years of planning and building in 2012 they opened up their first full service 100 seat restaurant. After years hard work and much success they decided it was time to take the next steps and find the next location to share their love of hospitality and BBQ with new guests.
The front door of Brothers Barbecue was open last Tuesday afternoon and the smoke from the grill was floating out into late
afternoon sunlight. The Tune Weavers were singing "Happy Happy Birthday Baby"
from the radio on the front counter and
there were fresh peach pies under the covered cake plate next to it. Mom baked them when she came by the other night, they tell me.
You can leave New York at the
door. When you walk into Brothers Barbecue you're walking into some place in the tidewaters of the Carolinas. And after you're
done with your meal, you might
not want to go back outside. Brothers Barbecue is owned and operated by brothers Jamie and Gavin Ralph-Farella
of Mountainville, with their younger
brother Christian. who's taking time off from school at Morehouse University in Atlanta to help. They needed him. Two weeks ago on a
Friday night they had to close
more than an hour early because
they ran out of meat and just about all side dishes. And last Saturday they ran out of pork and beef and chicken in the afternoon, so taped sign up on the frent door.
"Closed till 7:00. Fresh meat. When they were bringing the pork out of the smoker in the back of the restaurant they looked out the
front door. It was 6:59 and there
was a line of 25 people snaked back into the parking lot. "We were ecstatic. We couldn't believe says Gavin, age 27. who works the front counter, taking orders from customers
Brothers Barbecue specializes in great home cooking - and in par-ticular, in eastern North Carolina style smoked pork - which you can
get in a chopped barbeque sand-wich,
served on a nice squishy bun, with cole slaw don't try to imagine it, just go get one) or on a
plate with a side and pickles.
